The fastest-growing group of food shelf clients is the working poor. Forty-seven percent of households using food shelves in our area report the family’s major source of income is paid employment.
From Saturday, Dec. 5-12, you can drop off nonperishable food donations to any Warners’ Stellian location in the Twin Cities. New Spaces will hold an open house at its Burnsville office from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday Dec. 5 and Saturday Dec. 12 to collect nonperishable food donations. New Spaces will offer refreshments and a tour of their product showroom during the open house.
Second Harvest Heartland distributes more than 48 million pounds of food and grocery products annually to 960 food shelves, soup kitchens, shelters and programs in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. In the fight against hunger, every donation counts.
However, the most needed items include:
- Meats, fish and protein—canned tuna, ham or chicken, beef stew, chili, peanut butter,canned/dried beans
- Fruits and Vegetables—100% fruit juice, canned fruits & veggies, fruit preserves
- Complete meals—pasta & sauce, boxed meals, hearty soups
- Cleaning supplies—laundry detergent, paper towels, kitchen/bathroom cleaners
